State Primary & Municipal Election

Beginning January 1, 2024, Maine is transitioning from a closed primary system to a semi-open primary. This means unenrolled voters will now be able to participate in primaries. A voter not enrolled in a political party may participate in a party's primary without enrolling in the party. An unenrolled voter may vote in only one primary election.
Primary Elections determine each qualified party's nomination of candidates for federal offices and State and County offices. Party candidates who are elected at the Primary qualify to appear on the November General Election ballot.
Offices included in the 2024 Primary Election are United States Senator, Representative to Congress (both districts), all 35 State Senate districts, all 151 State Representative districts, and the following county offices, which vary depending on the county:
Judge of Probate, Register of Probate, County Treasurer, Register of Deeds, Sheriff, District Attorney and County Commissioner.
November 5, 2024 - General (Presidential ) Election
The General Election is held nationally on the first Tuesday following the first Monday in November. In 2024, Maine voters will select their choice for President/Vice President (this process is called "popular vote"),and elect one of Maine's two United States Senators, Maine’s Representatives to Congress, members of the Maine Legislature, and certain county officers.
Each party's nomination for President/Vice President of the United States, party candidates who are nominated as a result of the June Primary Election, and unenrolled candidates will appear on the General Election ballot.
Voter Registration
Residents may register to vote during regular business hours or make changes to current voting information such as change of name, address or party affiliation. A Registrar is available at the polls on Election Day as well. Unenrolled voters may enroll at any time, including Election Day. Voters must remain in the party for 3 months before the voter can file an application for either a withdrawal or a change of enrollment. There is a 15-day waiting period for a voter who withdraws from a party.
Municipal Elections - Select Board & School Board
November - The Annual Municipal Election to elect Select Board Members/Board of Overseers and the MSAD No. 75 School Board Members are held concurrently with the State Election on the first Tuesday following the first Monday in November.
MSAD No. 75 School District Budget
June - The Budget Validation Referendum Election is held annually on the second Tuesday in June within 30 days of the District Budget Meeting. The polls are open from 8:00am -8:00pm.
State and Federal Elections
June & November - State Primary and Referendum Elections are held on the second Tuesday in June. General and Referendum Elections are held on the first Tuesday following the first Monday in November of each year.
Public Notices of Town Meeting and Elections are posted at least seven days in advance with the date, time and location at the following locations:
