Paddling the Muddy

A Guide to Paddling Topsham's Waterways

Topsham's rivers have a long history of industrial use—mills on the Androscoggin, agriculture around the Cathance and Little. Recreational use of these resources, however, has not typically been encouraged or considered. In the summer of 2008, Topsham's planning office created this web site to help introduce the recreational opportunities provided by these rivers to the people of Topsham and nearby areas, as well as to facilitate increased access.

This web site contains information about paddling four of Topsham’s rivers: the Little, Muddy, Androscoggin, and Cathance. Regardless of these rivers’ respective histories or reputations, each of the suggested trips can provide you with an enjoyable, peaceful outing, and perhaps introduce you to a new area of Topsham. To help you plan your trip, each river’s page includes general information on the run, a map of the run, and directions to the put-in and take-out. Have fun!
