Muddy River

Forming the border between Topsham and Bowdoinham, the Muddy is an excellent river for exploring, with abundant wildlife and a wilderness feel. With many inlets and tributaries to investigate, as well as the potential for viewing animals like birds or beavers, this river would be an optimal excursion for families with young children.

From the bridge over the Muddy on the Foreside Rd., paddlers can travel for around 2 miles southwest to the “source” of the river. (The Muddy is actually more of a tidal inlet than a river.) Like the Little and Androscoggin, there are no hazards, but paddlers should keep in mind that the flow of the tide could make one leg of the journey difficult.

The Muddy is located off of the Foreside Rd., just before its intersection with Middlesex Rd./Rt. 24.
Currently, there is no public access to the Muddy, but more information can be provided by Topsham's Recreation Department at (207) 725-5821.
